Background

Pavillon, a non-profit, 50 bed adult residential treatment center for alcoholism and drug addictions is located in the scenic foothills of western North Carolina. They offer a full continuum of detoxification, residential and outpatient services. They offer inpatient and outpatient treatment, including Therapeutic Treatment, Relapse Prevention, Family Group and an Extended Stay program after residential treatment.

The Journey

Several years ago, Pavillon hit a communications roadblock. Basically, their different treatment programs couldn’t talk to each other. ”We had a non-integrated delivery of services.” said Anne Vance, Pavillon’s CEO. Clinicians couldn’t get access to the records they needed making it difficult to document the patient’s status. The charts were also not easily available when they were needed. They needed a solution fast.

CADAS is a private 120-bed, Non-Profit organization for chemically dependent individuals located in Chattanooga, TN. With a staff of 115 they offer inpatient and outpatient care to adults and adolescents and have a variety of programs offered to the community such as prevention programs in elementary schools, drug free workplace training and DUI School. CADAS has four other locations in Chattanooga, TN. 

Quest for the Right EMR

In 2004, CADAS’s EMR vendor stopped supporting the application that held CADAS patient medical records. This surprise immediately launched CADAS on a search for a new EMR partner.

The national picture as it pertains to technology usage in addiction treatment facilities will change dramatically in the next five years. The concentrated effort of national initiatives that have blossomed from the Bush administration’s call to automate health care will profoundly affect whether treatment providers automate and get aboard the technology train.

Background:

Father Martin’s Ashley, a 145-acre inpatient alcoholism and substance abuse treatment center nestled in Havre de Grace, Md., was founded in 1983 by Fr. Joseph Martin, S.S. (1924-2009). As a recovering alcoholic himself, Fr. Martin served as a vivacious testament to others struggling with substance abuse. His famous “Chalk Talk on Alcohol,” which initially began as his own personal witness to addiction recovery, eventually became a global resource over the next 50 years of his life and still touches touches thousands of people every year.

One project, many champions

Ready to embrace the full features of an EMR and a paperless care chain, Ashley’s first step was to decide what features their new EMR system should have, and then troll the market. Gerick was clear on the facility’s main goals: “We had two mantras: Enter data only once in the system and become paperless.”

But the vendor choice can make the difference between a productive experience and an installation disaster, Gerick notes: “If you choose a vendor whose software application isn’t their primary focus, it’s risky,” he says. “But it’s also risky if you choose a company that’s too saturated with clients. You’re not going to have much influence on the decisions they make, or how they change their software.”

Background

Marworth of Waverly, PA is one of the leading substance abuse treatment centers in the United States. Established in 1982, its long successful history of delivering both inpatient and outpatient care to the addicted is well recognized within its home state of Pennsylvania, as well as nationally. Marworth is a part of the Geisinger Health System and is accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Pennsylvania Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Programs (BDAP).

The Journey

In January 2005, the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers, NAATP organized a Software Summit in San Antonio, TX. They realized many of their members were facing the same dilemma as Marworth. The Summit brought together fourteen of the most prominent vendors in behavioral health and addiction treatment software.
